Estriol (generic name: Estradiol) belongs to the class of medications known as estrogen replacement therapy.
Estriol is used:
To manage various symptoms of menopause including abnormal uterine bleeding; hot flashes; vaginal itching, burning, or dryness; vulval or vaginal atrophy
To prevent osteoporosis (brittle bones)
For estrogen replacement therapy after failure of the ovaries
In the treatment of breast cancer and advanced prostate cancer
Estriol is a female estrogen hormone. It works by replacing natural estrogens in a woman who can no longer produce enough estrogen. It works for advanced prostate cancer by antagonizing male hormones.
Estriol is available in the form of estradiol valerate.
Estriol Recommendations
Follow the directions for using this medicine provided by your doctor. Take Estriol exactly as directed.
Estriol can be taken with or without food.
Typically, Estriol is taken for the first 21 to 25 days of each month. Women who have not had a hysterectomy (i.e., they still have a uterus) should take a progestogen (e.g., medroxyprogesterone) for the last 12 to 14 days of each Estriol cycle.
For the treatment of menopausal symptoms, the usual dose is 1 mg daily for 21 to 25 days of each month.
To prevent osteoporosis, the usual dose is 0.5 mg daily as soon as possible after the onset of menopause. The dose may be increased or decreased according to the level of estradiol in the blood.
Many things can affect the dose of medication that a person needs, such as body weight, other medical conditions, and other medications.
Avoid eating grapefruit and drinking grapefruit juice while taking Estriol.
If you miss a dose of Estriol, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.
Keep Estriol at room temperature, away from heat and moisture.
Estriol Precautions
Before taking Estriol, tell your doctor if:
you are allergic to any medicines;
you have liver problems; blood clots; or you have had a stroke;
you are pregnant or breast-feeding.
